What to do when transparency and clarity go opaque.

We frequently see rows of binders on shelves in our clients offices. The titles reveal a lot. These range from ‘Strategy 2020’ to ‘2013 Business Review’ to ‘Regional Action Plans’ and etc. etc. etc. What happened with these reports? Who created them and why? How much time and resource was spent creating these reports? Are they still being used and referenced? What was learned? What was not learned?

When to practice graphic recording?

One question we get all the time is “how can I practice my graphic recording skills when I am so busy?” We understand ‘busy’ and we know that practicing is what makes a good recorder. Practicing is an ongoing commitment of a good recorder.

The image above is a simple example by Katherine Woods. Our full team was on our weekly virtual call. This call was a graphic training opportunity, which we do regularly together to give feedback on recently completed graphics from client meetings to learn what worked and what might need some attention for future sessions. Katherine was not the virtual graphic recorder, one of our other team members had that role for this meeting.

And yet, Katherine took the opportunity to practice her own recording by creating her own chart of the virtual conversation being recorded by one of our team members. Katherine recorded it in her style at her desk on paper. Doing her own recording of our virtual meeting kept her engaged and she was able to practice her already ample skills.

We believe you have to practice all the time at every chance you get in order to master graphic recording. Once you have your basic skills you can build on them by practicing, and then have others feedback what works and what needs attention. If you are doing your own graphic recording for your meetings we have a simple rule to help you out. Keep it simple! Don’t complicate it because you want it to look pretty or you want to make sure your drawings are good. Keep it simple because it’s about the conversations in your meetings.

To keep it simple focus on your writing, use of colour, how to use lines and blank space. Those three skills will serve you very well. You can add icons and flow arrows and pictures as you feel more skilled. Meeting graphic recording is about serving the meeting delegates / participants, not serving your needs to draw. Pictures speak louder than words. One picture is worth a thousand words. Picture it! These phrases and many more like them are part of our daily speech and zeitgeist.

Your content. Your picture.

You spend a lot of time, effort and resources communicating your messages throughout your organisation. When we scribe your meetings we are actively listening for your key messages and organising them into your visual story. The visual story becomes part of your content. The content of your meeting is yours.

The picture, or visual story, or storymap, that we create with you is also yours. You own it. The icons and images are a part of your lexicon or library of communications. These visuals support your content communications.

There is a trend among some scribes or visualizers to own the images they create as if they are their personal work of art. Scribing Magic does not hold this point of view. We believe we scribe in service to the client and what we create with you is yours. Therefore, you own the copyright and can use the charts or storymaps how you want to. We are happy to manage having them printed and providing high resolution scans for you. But you own them. They are your content.

It is an important question to ask scribes. “Who owns the copyright on the charts created in our meetings?” The consequence of not holding the copyright can lead to a financial impact if you determine you want additional copies printed in any size or format.
