You really should’ve been there.
Meetings are complex real-time events with multiple, simultaneous, overlapping layers. Which means that for those not present, the graphic recorder’s output can sometimes seem a little complex to follow!
However, the examples we show here accurately capture the messages and mindsets of those involved in the meetings. A participant would be able to use the graphic to re-tell the story of the meeting: beyond that, they would be able to use the Graphic Recording to engage, communicate and gain broader agreement.
Take a look below at some of the examples of Graphic Recording we’ve produced for many of the world’s most successful organisations — and what some their senior executives and team leaders have to say about how Graphic Recording helps them meet their business objectives…

How we worked with one of the UK’s most powerful retailers to help them share their new vision and values with employees, and get the collaborative buy-in to make it all happen. (A big high-five to the team at Argos for their permission to share this with you.)

Graphic Recording for Argos at their Supply Conference.
01. Mission
The event: a conference for around 200 people from the Argos Supply Operations team. The task: share the new Argos vision and values with the group; help them understand the changes this would bring; get them thinking and planning on how to roll out the vision across business operations.
02. Methods
We graphically recorded a full day of group presentations and individual breakout meetings, capturing and consolidating the outputs of several sessions and many hours of discussion into a single, spectacular master graphic that attendees could view before departing.
03. Metrics
Primary gain: the impact and usefulness of having a single, consolidated, real-time graphic record capturing the busy day’s collaborative outcomes. Graphically merging the outputs of the breakout sessions locked in their role within the big picture. The graphic has been circulated via email and the original sits in the Head Office.
“We are a business going through transformational change, which is both exciting and challenging. My teams are responsible for all the people elements of that – recruitment, development and motivation around our strategies are at the heart. So, when I led our recent HR conference my challenge was to share a lot of strategic information, engage my teams around that and drive an action plan to motivate the whole business around the change. I needed help to capture that and create something that was tangible and we could refer back to. John from Meeting Magic was great because he stayed with us during the day and captured the essence of what we talked about in both words and pictures. He produced a huge graphic, which we have on display, and shows in a very engaging and accessible way what we talked about and what we are going to do next. More importantly, it shows the energy and enthusiasm in the room which is hugely motivational to us all. It continues to be a catalyst in creating conversations and discussion about the conference two months after the event.” – Sonia Astill, HR Director, Argos.

A glimpse of the graphic recording work we did for Tripwire, the major cybersecurity provider, at the hugely-attended #InfoSec15 and #BSidesLDN2015 information security events held at Olympia and the ILEC Centre in London.

Graphic Recording for Tripwire at their Information Security meetings.
01. Mission
The events: Key annual information security events #InfoSec15 and #BSidesLDN2015, held at Olympia and the ILEC Centre in London. The task: to graphically record 30 sessions at the two events covering complex industry-specific information. The graphic recordings needed to act as an aide memoire targeting both experienced industry professionals and infosec ‘rookies’.
02. Methods
We created individual A1-sized graphics (2 feet x 3 feet) on foam board for each session we attended. These were created live during the sessions and available for participants to view and photograph as they left each session. The graphics were then displayed on the Tripwire stand and photographed for sharing via Twitter and other social media channels. It was a busy three days!
03. Metrics
Primary gain: Tripwire was able to provide all attendees with a visual memory of each of the key sessions via Twitter and other social media feeds. The Tripwire-branded graphics also created a talking point at the end of each session, providing an opportunity to form relationships with potential new clients and promoting brand visibility.

A look at our live graphic recording work capturing keynote address and multiple conversations during Thomson Reuters’ ‘Innovation in Market Data Technology’ event, which featured Piers Linney (of Dragon’s Den fame) as keynote speaker.

Graphic Recording for Thomson Reuters at their 'Innovation in Market Data Technology’ event.
01. Mission
The event: Thomson Reuters’ Innovation in Market Data Technology conference targeting around 100 CIOs, senior leaders and directors from prominent UK organisations. Keynote speaker for the event was Piers Linney of Dragon’s Den fame. Our task: to graphically record the various conversations and the keynote address, supporting continuing contact with participants and creating marketing content for future events.
02. Methods
Live graphic recording of the event highlighting the key themes, concepts, thoughts and takeaways from the keynote and important discussions. This was then circulated via email to participants and other relevant contacts by Thomson Reuters to maintain conversational momentum after the event.
03. Metrics
Primary gain: Event attendees received a one-page visual summary of the event that was not reliant on them having any foreknowledge of the subjects covered on the day. This was particularly important given the diverse range of organisations, roles and levels of understanding reflected at the event. Thomson Reuters plans to use the visual outputs from this event to market future, similarly themed events.
“John recently provided the Meeting Magic and graphic recording services at our event on the 21st October in London – Innovation in Market Data Technology. The feedback on John and the concept of the graphic recording was universally excellent. He covered key themes that included; technology innovation, big data, collaboration and cloud solutions. The event was targeted at capital market participants and the work created by John tapped into the key themes spoken to by our panellists and tailored graphically to resonate with the audience. John spent a good amount of time on a briefing call with the Thomson Reuters team to understand the event, our solutions, the audience, the key themes we wanted to cover, and to ask a number of questions that would allow him to optimise his involvement but without stifling onsite creativity. I would definitely recommend John and Meeting Magic (and in fact already have to internal colleagues!) without hesitation. Great job!” — Kate Owen, Marketing Manager, Programs & Events Financial & Risk Business, Thomson Reuters.
