Thinking about listening in new ways.

For the new year it is valuable to take some time to think a little differently. We find that looking at how meetings happen is useful and supportive of our graphic recording and visual work.

When thinking about meeting this year we will be concentrating on what we call the 5C’s: connecting, collaborating, conversations, co-creating and culture. By thinking about these from the graphic recording perspective we find that we support our meeting facilitators and meeting sponsors so they get a depth of experience from us.

Visual thinking and recording those thoughts can support each of the 5C’s in capturing how they appear or exhibit themselves in your meetings, or in your organisation’s culture. We’ll be exploring these in more detail as the year progresses. Let us know how we can help you explore your 5C’s.

With the growth of tablet technology we are absolutely able to support your virtual meetings with visual communications and graphic recording. Having visual virtual meetings will not only make that individual meeting stronger but will help address some of the stress of the global versus local issue.

Virtual meetings can work for worldwide organisations or for smaller organisations that have chosen to work in distributed teams and work group. What to do when transparency and clarity go opaque.

We frequently see rows of binders on shelves in our clients offices. The titles reveal a lot. These range from ‘Strategy 2020’ to ‘2013 Business Review’ to ‘Regional Action Plans’ and etc. etc. etc. What happened with these reports? Who created them and why? How much time and resource was spent creating these reports? Are they still being used and referenced? What was learned? What was not learned?

How do you sustain institutional knowledge?

How do individuals, groups, teams, managers and leaders stay on top of the mountains of information, conversations, data and input in a way that helps the organisation stay in touch with what it knows.

When you add graphics to a meeting are you just jazzing up command and control or are you collaborting...really?

Are you planning your next year? Want a change from the same-old, same-old?

You review the numbers. You review the sales figures. You review your team’s performance. You review your team members. You review the marketplace, the economy, the state of the world. Then what?

Are you stuck in the same-old same-old meeting agenda design and meeting process? Are you futzing with the same-old hoping for a new-old? What ever it is you want ain’t gonna happen using the same-old. That old agenda design. That old team introduction. That old ‘go-around the room’ for ideas stuff. The same-old is so…same-old.

There are ways to make your meeting more engaging. Working visually is a place to start since 65% of your peeps are visual learners. Adding some ways to engage your kinesthetic learners helps, too, since about 15% of your peeps think that way. That’s a huge chunk of people the same-old isn’t reaching.

Have you tried a visual agenda, with maybe some written roles and rules for who is in the room, what they bring and how this meeting will be conducted? That one simple step speaks volumes to how your peeps will engage during this one meeting. Add a couple of simple templates for gathering and sharing ideas and you are on your way. (You don’t have to know how to draw to do these things. Visualising words only speaks louder than the voice. Make your meetings engaging and visually stimulating and we guarantee results that are different from your same-old same-old.

How to find a good graphic recorder.

Finding people who can draw is not difficult. Finding people who draw in a business environment or business meeting is a little more challenging. Finding a high-quality graphic recorder, or scribe, who understands the business of business, can listen for the critical information that needs to be retained by the group, and knows that the visual output of the meeting exists is in service of the group…well, that’s a bigger challenge.
